Hans does seem cocky and confident on the surface and he is to a degree, but he also blames himself for things that aren't completely his fault and he shuts down when he gets yelled at half of the time. Blames himself for the Talmberg ambush (genuinely not his fault), blames himself for the pond ambush and his company dying (partially his fault, Thomas did tell them to make camp). He's obviously affected by Hanush telling him that all of Rattay doesn't want him as their lord and yelling over his apology, and Henry's remakes in the pillory make him go silent for a whole day and decide to go separate ways. Not saying he's a uwu smol bean but he very much has self-esteem issues buried in there.
