There are plenty of mechanics for support, you just have limited resources to do so and you need to protect your flanks if you bulge the line. Look at what commanders do for you more closely. Previous activations, ranged combat, certain spells, close combat, and morale all interact to make things a lot more than just shoving lines of models together. It also has reinforcement mechanics tucked away in there.

Yeah, it shows. It's absolutely a rank-and-flank game. Some of the more fiddly mechanics you see in other games are abstracted a bit, of course. I'm not super enthused by the snap-to mechanic in particular even if it eliminates corkscrew charges. On the other hand the way units move when combat ends gives you all sorts of tactical options for following up on attacks, exposing flanks, and the like.
