Well the mobile version is a gacha.
And the game is actually a hit in Japan (of course). The consele version is just your typical sports game released annually like FIFA or NBA 2K.

As for the anime girls, the game's premise is training (you) as a baseball player throughout 3 years of high school (seems familiar?). You got supported by your fellow students, and they have anime girls as managers or even team members. While with chibi art style, that didn't stop people to like them. Some even do R18 with their chibi forms.

The console game has a lot of game modes to train (you), unlike umamusume which only has 1 style.

>Eikan Nine : (you) are the school team manager instead, training multiple players at once, can play almost infinitely.
>My Life : (you) already become a pro player. You can marry in this mode.
>PowerFest : (you) train by playing a successive matches on a limited time range, recruiting NPCs to make your team stronger.
>SucceSuccess : A literal gambling mode, only 5 minutes to train a player.
