If you were designing a game to scratch the Umamusume itch, but without all the bullshit, how would you do it?
I'll start with the low hanging fruit:
>In-game currency only gacha with a usable pity system
>Single player with peer-to-peer PVP as a side mode
>No timed or limited events and no RP/TP system
>Completely different spark/parent system to remove most of the RNG and grinding
>Better challenges for your legacies, including leagues and tournaments and relays
>No pointless obfuscation and hidden mechanics, including event choices and vague skill descriptions

For the most part, I'd probably just lean into typical roguelite meta-progression
>Several difficulty levels that unlock progressively (like Slay the Spire) so you have longer-term goals to work towards in the absence of PvP grinding
>New umas/cards are unlocked and upgraded over time via gameplay, with no gacha RNG involved
>Add in daily challenge runs with weird conditions/restrictions to give players more variety
>etc.
Then make the VN side of things way more involved, with more branching paths based on how well your uma's career goes (eg. having Nice Nature grow more confident over time if she wins a lot, instead of acting like she's a hopeless jobber even if you make her an undefeated triple crown champion)
I'd also probably remove the parent/inspiration system entirely, and compensate by adding some other way to raise your uma's track/distance/style aptitudes

Personally I like the idea of a good breeding system, it's just that Uma's is especially punishing and anti-fun. I'd love a system that allows you to try and create the perfect lineage over many generations, sort of like in Crusader Kings. It could resemble real life genetics with good/bad genes, mutations, and inbreeding risks.

First things first, I would remove the character gacha all together and add unlocks for each character with themed missions (example: to unlock doto beat opera by a distance, to unlock rudolf win the triple crown while undefeated, etc)

I agree that it's part of the game but just as how exciting it is it can be frustrating, I say an unlock system would be the best because it gives you a goal to work towards in which the reward would be guaranteed, as a compromise MAYBE you could have some sort of grindable currency to pull on the banner or spark a copy. Yeah, the deeply ingrained RNG along the short time between CMs means that (mostly) everyone has to work towards a perfect goal with suboptimal components and you can stop at any point you feel satisfied with your results, at least for me it feels rewarding theorycrafting what would be my best options with my current cards and parents and then watching my umas perform well after dozens of runs, especially when they beat someone with far better cards

A system where everyone gets everything means that its easier to get optimal results and the meta settles into a much smaller pool

Umas should be unlocked when you achieve certain goals, like winning the triple crown undefeated unlocks Rudolf, winning a sprint G1 after failing to win a G1 of a longer distance unlocks King Halo, etc etc.
You of course start off with the same Umas you get from your first 10 pull but besides that i think it'd be the best way to go on about this, even if it starts getting a bit complex to think of ways to unlock Umas past a certain number (because, Jesus, there's a lot of horses deserving a spot and some of the big hitters arent here yet like Contrail or Equinox).

I wouldnt remove it, but i would also change it so its not a complete rng and grindfest, some Umas should give stats and sparks that SHOULD be very efficient for certain Umas (like Sprinters should give good stats for other Sprinters like Speed and Wit) but also extra sparks that work for others, emulating how not all horses are bred together just because of their pedegree in certain races (Stay Gold was desired because in spite of his poor G1 records he was really durable for a throughbred, Kitasan has great lungs, Tachyon had insane burst speed, etc).

You could still achieve the same effect in a single-player game, even assuming there are no patches. The meta progression would be either pre-scripted or procedurally generated with enough variables so as to be unpredictable.

I think CMs could be more interesting if each one had a somewhat random pool of what runners you could field (and this pool would be the same for everyone). With different possible teams it wouldn't be possible to "solve" a CM ahead of time, as depending on the pool you'd have to prepare for different scenarios. For example, Cancer with and without Seiun as a possible runner would be very different, Taurus with or without Nature would also be very different. Meta runners like XOguri wouldn't always be available so less risk of getting sick of always facing/running her. Maybe the same could be done for support cards.
I really feel that the "make do with what you have" part of gacha can be quite interesting, so I'd want to preserve it, and this might be a reasonable way to go about doing so after getting rid of the monetization and letting you acquire horses and cards through other means.

Is this the thread? This was my first attempt at a Guts Tachyon. She's doing well stats wise but she has nothing to compete against strong umas in the last spurt. Not really worth doing unless you can't get the stat requirements by normal means.

Expand the card system so its not gacha dependant, you can buy items from the shop that enhance the status of support cards.
Some extra OP effects trigger if met with specific standards.
Keep the gacha but give the player options to upgrade shitty cards and so on. You can tell I don't like power creep in uma musume

Basically it depends on what you are, F2P are by far missing out on a lot of cards that have a lifespan of 4 months but are strong enough to be relevant in boosting uma's rating.
You aren't missing out too much but you are slowly lagging behind the others who use their credit card

After the heartbreaking scenario record Oguri with long S, I did another try and got an even better one where the medium S hit. I seriously hope that this is enough stamina.

With Umas, a bit, some of the new releases get absurd unique abilities and inspirations that make them OP as racers or as parents but the true criminal in all of this are the support cards since some SSRs last less than a year in relevance in JP (i.e Tachyon's SSR speed), there's few mainstays like Kitasan Black and Kitasan gets replaced by Almond Eye's card at one point.
Some of the mainstays like Super Creek SSR do stay relevant tho.

So it turns out that a 4/1/1 deck can just magically work. Pic related is my first attempt with it, and it's better than any 4/2 and 3/2/1 attempt I've made for Leo. She has a lot of effective HP, so even rushed or 3+ gold drains should leave her unfazed.

Powercreep mainly comes in the form of new scenarios, though newer cards will eventually have multiple gold skills as well. On the Satono island scenario you can easily get 5k+ skill points, for example.

I feel like you could hit that a lot easier with King Halo and Kitasan instead of sweep if you get both to rainbow levels early. A set of stam parents and 3 power cards with high mood/friendship and creek. If you're running ogurin the event scarlet's race planner tends to be more relaible and cheaper than BoFA and you'll be able to fit more skills. King and Kitasan would also subsidize Swinging Maestro.

If you're going to reroll for anything, your biggest priorities should be Kitasan Black SSR and Super Creek SSR. Both are generically strong cards that will remain viable for at least 2 years or so
Riko is apparently really good short-term, but will have a far shorter shelf life than those two and should thus be less of a priority. As a new player you shouldn't be worrying about competing in PvP anyways

You get so many storylines and umas for free. The paid packages seem horribly priced. If you really want an uma enough, you just save up to get her during her banner or use your headstart voucher on her.
The only reason to spend is if you really want a certain uma, or if you're trying to do PvP. But the gameplay doesn't have enough depth to make PvP fun, and purchasing a storylines for like a hundred bucks when you get twenty others for free feels like a total ripoff.

URA Finale scenario is quite repetitive and you see most of a girl's events by playing through the career with her once. The main story chapters tell things from a different perspective entirely, while the character stories are rather short.

Whenever I feel the itch of spending rising I pretend my stocks had a bad day and just spend a bit. When you have some money invested and some retard says something and you lose like 3k in a day just to win 5k the next day, and so on, money starts to lose a bit of it's meaning. Speed is good. Stamina could be a bit higher. Ideally you would take like 200 points out of Wit and put it into Power. But mostly, you have nothing to close out the end of the race before everyone catches up to you. Didn't inherit Angling and Scheming or Red Shift, no nothing. A few things

One, fronts need Seiun Sky's unique. You get this by using her as a parent or borrowing a Seiun parent. You NEED this for fronts. It activates on the final corner if you've sustained your lead and gives you a huge acceleration boost. This keeps you at the front and prevents you from being passed. It is mandatory for front runners if you want to actually win.

Two, no groundwork. This is an ability that gives you a huge acceleration boost at the start of the race that allows you to surge in front of everyone and allows you to be in the lead, which is where the front wants to be, and wants to stay, because if you lose the lead, it's really hard to get it back.

Groundwork needs three green abilities to trigger. Green abilities are ones like firm conditions, non-standard distance, and so on. They will activate given the conditions of the course are correct. You can also use the Focus ability as one of the activations, but it is prone to RNG. Green abilities activate no matter what so long as the conditions are met.

Lastly, your power is too low for a front.
In cancer, if your power was below 1000, you would struggle. I would say for a front to do well in this race, you'd want at least 800 power.

Asides from that everything else does look pretty decent at a glance. But you're missing a few very crucial elements to have a good front runner. It's one of the harder classes to build around, so as a beginner it's gonna be a little rough getting used to it.

In order to get groundwork it's a bit tricky as you have to sort of breed it in or borrow it in and hope it triggers during an inspiration event, as it's very hard to get from cards in a run, or let's just say not ideal to do that, so you want to get it from breeding. So yeah it's a whole thing.

It's a pretty low chance to get Slow Metabolism, but even if you do, as long as it takes a single Infirmary visit to cure, it's basically the same as hitting Rest (+50 energy over one turn) and getting an additional +10 skill points. Stat wise Biko and TT perform about the same in a double rainbow with Kitasan but I'd give a stronger edge to Biko because training effectiveness is pretty universal and the race bonus adds up a bit if you pass the 33% mark, the higher specialty is just gravy.

My experience trying out a late surger, it relies a lot on positioning and the room. You have to hope there aren't too many fronts so your late actually has a chance to be in 6th place, you have to hope the Natures don't screw her over by being in front of her, you have to not get blocked. The one advantage lates have is that for some reason, Iron can proc earlier than other accel skills on this track. So if you actually do proc Iron, you have a good chance of chaining it into Red Shift and you have a much stronger chance of winning from there.

Have you done any test races. I've done quite a few, and I've been on the receiving end where I've had my Maru get hit by 3 of them. It's very strong, but it's there to kill front runners mostly. It is the ONLY way to stop a strong Maru other than praying RNG fucks up her skill activation.

Umalator is just a tool. You need to actually see it firsthand in races to understand what makes it strong.

If you want that, you gotta go to /vg/. Most /v/ clubs are a mixed back of high-performers. Lots of A clubs, but only a couple A+ hanging the 400s now. S is top 100, and we're not getting there without explicit quotas and nobody wants that. The most strenuous quota on /v/ is doing a career a day.

I would just say the Umalator is just useful to get some ideas of what skills might be good, but you need to do lots of practice races and pay attention to the skills that are going off to see your weak points.

Just shooting off dominators isn't enough to win. You need a good ace to actually capitalize on it. For most people, this will be something like a Pace Oguri, but there's other options of course. Dominator is very strong, and it's remained strong even in Japan
