It was meant as a heavy fighter / long range interceptor / escort. Literally based off the P61. Meant to fly deep into enemy territory, attack whatever it has to attack including capital ships and then fly back home and with its rear tail gunner kill anything trying to chase it.
In practice I would say its like a cross between P38, F14 and F18
