Have you ever checked out the show "Other Space"? Only lasted one season, but featured Joel Hodgson and Trace Beaulieu from MST3K, as well as Eugene Cordero who would eventually voice Rutherford on LD. No lore, no consistent alien presence, just lots of sci-fi weirdness.
