I completely agree with you. It's why I think you shouldn't trouble yourself with these higher concepts (at this point) because they only serve to confuse you and slow you down. I do think that, like authors that analyze existing books, game devs should look at past games they enjoy and try to figure out what makes them fun. Hell I think in game jam cases, they should take an existing idea, add some new mechanics, then try to design this new game around those new mechanics. You have such little time to make a game, that you probably don't have enough time to create an entirely new concept from scratch. Don't re-invent the wheel, just do what works, and put a little pony spin on it.
