Game jam: One Button
Hello and welcome once again to the gamejam! I normally only do these at the online cons, but some people showed interest in doing them every 4 months, so consider this our trial run!
For those of you not in the know, here's how it works:
1. Wait for the Jam to start (Check your exact date at: (https://itch.io/jam/mlp-off-con-game-jam-one-button)).
2. Once the clock starts ticking you start working on your game
3. Submit it before you reach the deadline for it to get showcased on stream! (either on itch or emailing me the game)
Now here's the thing, it's going to be a little different this time round since there'll be no con to show these off. My plan is to do a stream via cytube for the showcase, possibly on October 19 on sunday, 6 EST. Check the anchor for updates in schedule or anything related to the Jam

After that wall of text, let me present to you the theme for the Jam: One button!
Read that again, that's one (1) button. The games of this Jam have to be either playable using a single button (be it a keyboard key, right click of a mouse or however else you interpret it) or be centered around the press of a button.I keep saying that word, it's losing all meaning
The main thing I want out of this is short, finished games. I myself struggle with the scope of my projects, it's a skill that needs to be practiced, so let's practice it!

Any of this is subject to change, check the anchor for updates. This is a community thing, so if any of you have opinions or disagree on anything, please let me know

FAQ:
>When's the Jam running
As of now, from oct 3rd to oct 19th. Thread has been created beforehand for visibility
>Where is it going to be streamed
Check the anchor within a week of the deadline, I should be set up by then
>Hey OP, if you want small games why are you giving almost three whole ass weeks?
I'm not giving you three weeks, I'm giving you three weekends. I don't want to capitalize your time, I know some of you will be very busy this time of the year, and I don't expect you to work on your games every day.
>How long will the stream be?
I don't know, depends on how many games are submitted. There is no time limit for the stream this time, so we can go as long as we like! ... But the ideal time may be a couple of hours. We'll see
>Will it be recorded?
Yes! I'll record it myself, with chat, and upload it on pony.tube
>Can I work with others to make a game?
Yeah that's fully allowed. You can do it solo or in a team
>What if I cheat and start earlier
Do not cheat! But if you do don't tell me... And if you do tell me I'll pretend I didn't hear/read it. I suggest you stick to the time given, but there won't be any penalties. This isn't a competition, and there is no reward Yet other than finishing your projects.
>What if I want to make a bigger game?
You could in theory, but you'll burn yourself out. I'd like for you guys to participate in this and future game jams. If this one works out we'll be doing one every 4 months. I recommend you save the bigger projects for when we have an audience in the triple digits!
>Can I submit multiple games to the Jam?
Yes! You CAN submit multiple; you're allowed to... But people normally only do one. Since the goal is centered around small games for this Jam, I supposed some more experienced devs might find it trivial and may look for extra things to do, so they can do multiple instead and stop themselves from bloating their game! Or just polish their one game, the chioce is (you)rs!
>Fuck you and fuck this I'm doing my own thing
Yeah, I guess you can, and we'll still check it out on stream if you decide to share it with us. But I recommend sticking to the restrictions. People find they're more creative when there are limitations!

On a slightly unrelated note, you may have noticed the unidentified mare in the OP pic, say hello to: Time Crunch! She's an overconfident procrastinator. She works better under pressure... Or so she claims. Don't be like Time Crunch, pace yourselves!
This is the OC I came up with for the Jam since I wanted a special OP pic for the thread, but didn't have any mascots to use. I claim no ownership and consider her to be a thread OC.
I was thinking of her Cutie Mark being an alarm clock, but I haven't actually come up with a design. Also, I can't shake the feeling that she's missing something...

1 button reminds me of that very old Armour Games where you clicked on 1 button and it kept changing between minigame to minigame, some even tried copying it unsuccessfully. The whole point of it was that it was very very sneaky and creative like flip the switch till you get the correct number or color.

So gamejams are a nice time to test your skills out, but this thread like we've discussed before ... can also be the ground for discussing new game ideas and game mechanics , sorry that I haven't contacted any of you for that.
So so so many good games on Kongregate, Newgrounds, Armour Games that could make for amazing games on their own like Bubble Tank.

I actually am really curious to discuss with you guys new genres and game mechanics and game ideas like those old spider games where you're not allowed to step on the web for too long or the spider comes and eats you. I love those puzzle games oh oh or like those pyramid exploding barrels game where you have to collect all the diamonds.

Yeah anyway I'm open to discussing with you horror games and even lewd games such as you know sex simulators and this 1 great idea I had for this biology RPG which probably has been done before, but nobody ever linked me to it.
Right so I have this idea for taking care of your main character's health like Doctor Mario but none of that tetris shit, instead it's more like those battleship games where you place turrets strategically. And no no that's not the entire game, that's simply the second part to the game just like RPGs have gear and inventory, so will your inner organs be like gear.

So you have this secondary area with units and percentages where you feed your character quality food, resources, minerals, etc. and they appear in your pony's body while you're busy fighting enemies like a normal RPG.
Your body is like a real-time RTS arena where armies have fights. I thought of this idea in Starcraft where we don't have turn-based combat.
It's a great idea cause it can simulate cancer, poison, disease, corruption, all sorts of stuff in real time and not through basic ass -1 HP per second. Ever watched Ozzy & Drix? or any insideout episode? just like that. Oh and think of the alien biology of a pony and how it differs from unicorn to pegasus to alicorn and how cyborgs go, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
The point is it goes 1 step above inventory management ... you also have to manage your body's innards! while fighting off enemies in real life? isn't that great? and you can have a boss fight where you have to kill the bitch from the insideout with a terrible disease mwhahaa. You can simulate fevers. It's a RPG Doctor simulator! it will finally give poison and heart attacks in video games the proper detail they need, you can cut your own arm to stop the poison isn't that great? just clog your arteries so the black widow poison doesn't spread or pegasi can be like cats, they're not affected by black widow poison.

You can use any engine or make your own. I've seen the majority use Godot and Unity, a couple game maker projects, Ren'py, etc. You can use basically anything. And it isn't "now" you'd still technically need to wait for the Jam to start, though with now almost three weeks until that, I'd understand it a bit more if people cheated

Before OP started his OP the idea was to make a true mini gamejam, normally in real gamejams you're only allowed 2-3 days. Not 2-3 weeks.

I think after the 1 button game another gamejam should be hosted which isn't so limited. OP did that because supposedly last gamejam a lot of people were wasting time as opposed to working everyday, albeit as you all know people have jobs to attend to to survive and can only work full time on weekends, some not even wanting to because you want to crack a cold beer on a Friday night and wake up at 1PM on a Saturday, not go back to work after you just came back from your job.

Problem with mini game jams, as you said, is that it requires you to no-life those two specific days.
Contrary to the stereotype, most people are busy with irl stuff to comply to such constrictive timelines. Hence why I decided to give so much time to this seemingly short Jam.
>OP did that because supposedly last gamejam a lot of people were wasting time as opposed to working everyday
I wouldn't say that. Not "wasting" time, people are just busy.
I don't think I said that and I don't know where you got that idea, there were people that spent literally 50 or so hours in their games last Jam. If the mascot mare in the OP gave you that idea, that's just a parody of what happens in all fields and to everyone involved in content creation, it's nor meant to be taken seriously or a personal jab at anyone. So, sorry if it felt like an attack

Since with this timeline anons can recover from their anniversary hangovers, would there be some creativity left for a few more panels, to turn this into a little pony online convention? We'd be gathering on cytube for the 10/10 horse IGN journalist, so this is almost like a con already, could be expanded into an evening/night of fun. Please forgive me for /r/, just throwing a barebones idea out.
Anonymous No.42607793 [Report] >>42608263
>>42607756
That sounds like fun to me, but I don't know how many people would actually end up submitting a panel. You'd probably have to make a separate thread just to make it known that there is more than just the game jam going on. And it would probably be pretty disorganized without some proper planning.

Well I'd be up for it, but it'd be rudimentary as heck. If you guys have an idea of what you'd want to do, you can hit me up and we can queue your thing before the Jam. We can get a schedule going. Simple "cozy" panels is what I think would be best.
I'm not expecting triple digit attendance, so just be aware of that.
I think we can make a thread if we get enough "panels", depending on how many people want to do something for this in-between cons.

>"close the game", the game
>there's only one button you need to press, the red X
>but with each attempt ponies try to convince you not to do it, not to leave them
>the only winning move is not to play
>but it's got ponies
This seems easy to implement (even in a fucking Excel spreadsheet), you could put the close button in-game to avoid having to learn Win32 API to hook the native button, and then the "only" thing you need is ideas for progressively more convincing ponies. Stuff like pic rel, some sentences said by specific ponies, maybe a song, maybe a cute Applebloom telling (You) she's got a special appul pie in the oven that she wanted to show (You), surely you'll stay right?
So technically you'd probably need another button with "okay, I'll stay" for giving up and continuing to horse around with those equines. You could randomize the screens for that sweet unpredictable playthrough, beloved by all IGN journalists alike. You could have a simple score count for how strong anon's will to leave ponies was, based on how many screens he clicked the X on before giving up.
See, that sounds nice enough to me, if you've got ponies in your heart then go for it. I have fewer ponies than (You), so I'm leaving this idea up for grabs.

Should we start talking about something to keep the thread alive? Like for example I'm sure there's a lot of non gamedevs around here who'd like to know how games are made, but in the interest of everyone we should answer only really unique and weird questions, not something basic you can google such as how do you code a renderer, a light system, a physics system, is the renderer separate from the physics system, how do you create a quality renderer? how many LoD objects should I have? how do I lower the polygon count and resolution through a program so I don't waste my time doing it manually?
No, I'm talking really weird mechanics and shit which we might know about or we're interested enough to document ourselves and to explain it to others such as a magic system centered arond shadows and NPCs detecting shadows in stealth games without your shadow literally being a separate entity.
Or how would I personally think of programming a skeleton with functioning organs and cells inside of it? How would I personally go about coding Factorio with your 1 weird idea/mechanic? Give some weird ideas which haven't been done already and don't make go "You just do it".

Here's another cool one which actually is really easy to explain to anyone:

God sure feels good being the only intellectual on this board who's capable of attending a college on his own grades and merits.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2184130/MareQuest/
You're supposed to take the good parts out of it and those are:
All ponies go insane and lose their snowpity if they don't get fed and socialized, turning into Pinkamena Story of the Blanks shadows of their former selves.
You feed them and put them on Genosha, the paradise Equestria Island far away from all the problems of the world.
You go on adventures outside the Genosha island to recover more mares to add to your collection so the mares can socialize and play and relish in the sun and totally not Epstein Island.

The thing that game is missing like you've said are intelligent personalities since every mare has the personality of a background baby character from G3, G3.5, Newborn Cuties.

There needs to be more enemies besides corrupted ponies, manticores, beholders, etc. and stronger variants of corrupted ponies such as Stygian and Luna.

The island needs to sometimes be threatened under attack or hinted at that either via sabotage(Nightmare Moon) or via a cataclysmic event(Superman/Alicorn mountain) everyone dies and you have to go rebuild your paradise estate in dream valley straight out of G1.

What do you think a MLP FIM G4 game's elements should be?

Anon...take stuff that happens in Equestria, whatever it is, that only happens in Equestria, and turn it into a game mechanic.
Let's say we have a three-player game, one character being a unicorn, another an earth pony, and the other being a pegasi, where they would have to work together to complete levels using their unique abilities.
Maybe you need to get some item on a ledge high on a mountain. But it's too heavy and too far away to use magic, and while there happens to be a cloud you can use to get across, pegasi are the only ones that can walk on clouds without falling to their deaths. So you have the pegasus pony get it.
Maybe you need to buck trees to get apples for health, but only earth ponies have the strength to do that. So you have the earth pony do it.
That's not really good example. I don't know, I'm sort of just throwing stuff around, but hopefully that gives you some kind of idea of what you can play with. If you watch the show, something should stick out enough to you, lore or character-wise that allows you to do something original instead of just replacing Crash Bandicoot's model with Pinkie Pie's.

>I've been wondering since the last jam. How do you make a game actually feel like mlp?
You stop worrying about this shit because first and foremost the most important thing is to actually have something fucking playable. If there was a thriving, active, and talented community of game developers on this board, then making a game feel more like MLP would be a noble goal. Whatever that means. But making a game feel more like MLP has way more to do with aesthetics and sound than it does gameplay mechanics. A true MLP feeling game would be something like the original Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon. Where you move to a quiet town (ponyville) and slowly get to know the inhabitants as time goes on. You get to experience seasonal events, birthdays, and town milestones. Could be very cozy.

Personally I don't care for this high constant philosophical wankery of "what makes a game truly FEEL like MLP..." because it's almost never as important as just the moment to moment gameplay. Make the game fun first, then try to make it feel more like MLP. Whatever the hell that means.

Nobody here is talented and they don't know what they're talking about. Not a single person in this thread knows shit about game design.
But that isn't the point. The point is to create despite that, making your idea real, having fun, and perhaps learning something from it. Because that's where experience comes from.
If you have a pony idea and the means to make it real, go do it. Don't let people filter you from getting experience just because you don't already have experience.

I completely agree with you. It's why I think you shouldn't trouble yourself with these higher concepts (at this point) because they only serve to confuse you and slow you down. I do think that, like authors that analyze existing books, game devs should look at past games they enjoy and try to figure out what makes them fun. Hell I think in game jam cases, they should take an existing idea, add some new mechanics, then try to design this new game around those new mechanics. You have such little time to make a game, that you probably don't have enough time to create an entirely new concept from scratch. Don't re-invent the wheel, just do what works, and put a little pony spin on it.

Put me in charge of a porn game and I'll go full autism with the realistic cell physics and stretching despite the programming side not requiring more than a location and said location detecting how much % the object is covering the location, not even accounting for inertia for the thrust, let alone the blood and lube required for stretching the epithelial cells, let alone the clit and neurology involved. That's the interaction part that porn games never get right.
Any thoughts on the simulation of it, anons? SDT did it simple with the locations, no physics simulation beyond the spit and cum hanging out which I think was already precoded and preavailable in flash.

The next problem though is the limited audio & visuals. You can give any person endless pleasure, but if said person sits there like a dead-eyed fish you don't even know if its alive or not then it's no fun. You need endless exciting reactions and interactions with said person to make an interesting and entertaining simulation. You can use AI, but again if you're a perfectionist like me you'll waste time creating masks and layers for everything to add lipstick coloration, skin colors, hair color, eyeshadow color, tattoos and AI can't even do layers atm, that's why everyone is absolutely correct that it's useless, especially if you have to yell at it 20x times "Just do it" instead of IT understanding what it has to do and coming back to it 20 minutes later with all your animation frames correctly layered, masked and accounted for.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uelGUXRqi1M

I guess if you're alright with endless AI images weirdly animated and endless audio sounds at different pitches then it can work.
I'm curious what Drud14 would have to say about AI, since many people also yell about bad flash animation and the background music from the voice samples not being separated and extracted correctly. You simply end up accepting the lower standard, but there needs to be some form of immersion where if ironically some parts are too high quality than others then the immersion breaks and that's the problem with AI. You hang out the most beautiful looking banner that reads welcome princess Celest.
