>it feels totally different tonally from the rest of the movie
It's been a thing since NOTLD that zombies aren't the only threat in a zombie film. Psychological horror has always been a part of that subgenre.

He gets help from the infected that he intentionally lures with the siren to distract the soldiers so no.

You're mentioning movies that all came out over a decade after 28 Days and ignoring the part where two of the soldiers didn't want to go along with the rape in the first place. Romero swore until his death that Ben being black was purely coincidental and that people read too much into it. It wasn't until after Dawn of the Dead that he started becoming obsessed with making all his movies social commentaries. People change. There was no feminism in Sunshine for example aside from an offhand remark Rose Byrne made which seems like something women would realistically say.

Oh I see, so you're just triggered because a movie made you uncomfortable. That explains a lot.

It's not about the sexual relief it's about the need for warmth and intimacy. They did know that the zombies would starve eventually but there was still no hope for a future beyond that given the lack of communication with the outside world. How you guys don't understand this says a lot about the type of people you are.
