Only about half of the readers actually pick up the clues that Shadrach was going insane
Even the Wikipedia summary glosses over the fact that Phineas was the one guy who was seriously concerned over Shadrach's mental health while everyone else just thought it was funny
It wouldn't surprise me that the guys at Disney wanted to play the story 100% straight
