What's the most depressing canceled /co/ film? For me it's the Disney film King of the Elves, based on the PKD short story about an old man who gets drawn into a war between trolls and elves.

I guess it doesn't count, but the PKD short story that Screamers was based on had a sequel, "Jon's World". Unfortunately, the producers preferred to do a Screamers 2 without any PKD.

This was originally set to be directed by Simon Wells. He originally was going to direct the sequel to the live-action 1995 movie, but when Casper 2 was cancelled in July 2000 due to poor reception of the DTV movies and hesitation of its star Christina Ricci, he backed out from that one, and moved on to direct the remake of The Time Machine, released in March 2002.

Wells came back to DreamWorks following the indestructible failure of Disney's Mars Needs Moms (and the closure of ImageMovers Digital), and once Harvey Comics' owner Classic Media was purchased by DreamWorks, and rebranded as a newly formed DreamWorks Classics, the studio had plans to make movies and shows based on old properties, with Mr. Peabody and Sherman releasing to theatres on March 14, 2014. Weeks beforehand, they announced a CG Casper movie was in development. Wells was set to write and direct with John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky (writers and producers of King of the Hill and co-creators of Silicon Valley) attached to co-write with. Around that same time, another property from the Harvey Comics line, Hot Stuff the Little Devil, was being developed as a live-action/CG-hybrid movie, with Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux (writers of Bob's Burgers) to pen the script.

However by the time Mr. Peabody and Sherman came to theatres, it was a box office bomb, and the studio was already facing its economic downturn of its own by the end of that same year, cancelling projects left and right, including then-upcoming B.O.O., a similar CG supernatural ghost-themed adventure comedy which was already having a troubled production of its own. Both Casper and Hot Stuff movies ended up also being scrapped. DreamWorks would continue to use Harvey Comics characters with the show Harvey Street Kids, which ran between 2018 to 2020, and in 2022, Wu Kai-yu (writer of shows like Hannibal and The Flash) was set to develop a live-action/CG-hybrid, but nothing came of it as of 2025.

Between 1998 to 2001, Uli Meyer, who was an animator that worked on such movies as Space Jam, worked on a project of his own known as The Duck, which was another live-action/cartoon hybrid about a real-life duck who accidentally turned itself into a cartoon duck and decides to become a superhero to save everyone from fear and danger. Of all things, just a proof of concept art (pic related) and two short clips (links down below) for the movie were made. According to him the director, he and his crew were excited once 20th Century Fox successfully picked it up, and were this close to making it. But once fundings of it pulled the plug on it, production of it quickly got cancelled

The Animation Obsessive newsletter interviewed writer-director Piet Kroon, who, after working as animation director on WB's Osmosis Jones, went to Disney's Florida studio to work on an animated film called "Fraidy Cat":

The film was going to be a Hitchcock-esque "wrong man" story about a cat on the run with a bird who might be a spy (the article mentions lots and lots of Hitchcock references). It was being worked on for years at the Florida studio, through various writers and directors and lots of studio politics (though nobody seems to be sure exactly who originated the original idea), but it was never actually greenlit, and it was cancelled EDIT: did not go ahead into production when the Florida studio was closed in 2004.

If I remember right,

the story originally had a downbeat ending that fits the theory that Shadrach has dementia but the editor argued that said ending invalidated the prophecy plot point and took the story out of the realm of fantasy as a result.
Dick actually agreed with that logic and rewrote the ending to make it a happier one that made the prophecy come true.
So he really was the King of the Elves.

Except Phineas and Shadrach talk about their long friendship together and it's only when Phineas died he's outright said to "have always been the ancient troll king"
It still leans with Shadrach rationalizing why he killed his best friend with a reason that fails to line up with what the story had already established ergo, Shadrach's fucking nuts

A modern day remake of the live-action/animated Warner Bros. cult classic from 1963 The Incredible Mr. Limpet was originally set to start production between 1998 or 1999 with Jim Carrey to star, Steve Oedekerk to direct and the writing duo of Space Jam to pen the screenplay for a set release date of Summer 2000 (or at the latest 2001). Budget concerns and horrifying CG effects accompanied with bad test reactions led to the cancellation of the project. Brad Bird originally wanted to direct the movie after completing The Iron Giant as Oedekerk's permanent replacement, but terrified what the project looked like, he quickly backed out.

Mike Judge (Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill and Office Space) would end up being the director of the movie and also penning the script in addition, and also wanting actors like Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Bill Murray, Chris Rock, Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller, and Adam Sandler to star as the lead role, and had hoped to start production in early-2001, but nothing came of it since. In fact, the almost a whole entire decade, there was radio silence about a Mr. Limpet remake up until Summer 2009, when Kevin Lima announced as director, and on June 2010, he appointed Zach Galifianakis (fresh from The Hangover) as the main star. However on March 2011, Richard Linklater would be involved with the project and was announced as director on January 2014. That same year in July, Jon Hamm, Danny McBride, Sarah Silverman, Kevin Hart, Josh Gad, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jordan Peele had entered talks for various roles in the film, but one month later, Linklater left to do his next movie, Everybody Wants Some!!

Over a decade later, and there's still no word about a Mr. Limpet remake as it's still in development hell to this very day at the time of posting.

Here's test footage of the Oedekerk version from circa 98/99:

This short movie was supposed to be an actual full-length musical movie called Larkins that was scheduled to come out on February 16, 2018 by DreamWorks. However, the movie was outright cancelled after Universal bought the company. The directors hoped to sell the movie to other companies, but none were ever interested in it.

Depressing as in the original story is depressing? Yeah, your pick is definitely up there but Disney woulda Disneyfied it just like they do to everything. Bambi is perhaps the most egregious example. Salter's original is about a deer growing up in a dangerous forest. It’s a quiet, sometimes harsh meditation on growing up, death, and survival β€” with humans shown as a destructive force. It’s less a sweet story and more an allegory about the loneliness of maturity, the violence of nature, and learning to survive without illusions. But it goes dark. Real dark. Bambi has a cousin, Gobo, who was injured as a fawn and abandoned so the other deer could be safe. He was taken in by humans who nursed him back to health then found his way back home. Happy ending, right? No.
For the rest of the book, Gobo keeps talking about how good and benevolent He is (humans are referred to with He/Him pronouns which are always capitalised, extremely uncommon for German). His naive belief in the goodness of man leads to his death. He approaches a group of men whilst telling the other deer they're dumb for being so frightened of humans and promptly gets his head blown off by a hunter.
There's speculation that this was meant as an anti-government allegory with humankind meant to represent government.

I guess it's not depressing but I'm curious what it would have been like
After the success of Snow White practically every studio announced plans for an animated feature, including Walter Lantz Productions, who announced an adaptation of Aladdin featuring Abbott and Costello (at that time also signed to Universal)
After the failures of both Fleischer's "Mr. Bug Goes to Town" and Disney's Pinocchio they were all cancelled

No, but many of the characters are.
Disney never had any entirely original, cohesive story animated movies (as in not something like Fantasia or Three Caballeros, which were both just a series of vignettes packaged as feature-length films) until The Lion King and even that one was heavily inspired by Kimba and Hamlet. Dumbo could be said to be an original since it's based on a story Disney bought the rights to before it ever got published but that's literally the only other one before Lion King. The first entirely original animated movie they ever made was Lilo and Stitch in 2002.

Thank goodness that never happened. It looks nifty but I can only imagine how Disney would have ruined it.

There was also a 90s She-Hulk TV pilot in the works. She was going be played by Gabrielle Reece and they planned to paint her gold for some reason.
This in addition to another Hulk movie that would have brought back Nicholas Hammond as Spider-Man in the black suit (cancelled due to Bixby dying), and a full season of Rex Smith Daredevil that got cancelled because The Flash failed.

Why is Disney so cowardly? Is it because they have to cater to the knuckle-dragging lowest common denominator to make a profit? Does this mean that as IQs continue to decline, mass media will just get stupider and stupider and stupider in a desperate attempt to part retards with their money?

Sometimes Disney can make some decent stuff (tangled, Mulan, ENG) but anything that has actual heavy themes and real emotion usually fails since they’re so safe and have refuse to have any weight in their stories (unlike the original fairy tales). Lilo and stitch and dog and the hound are probably the only exceptions.

Grumpy old jazzman forced to help overtly cute fae would actually be a very fun movie. A straight male protag is a hard sell to disney right now but he is very black so who knows. Problem is its the old fashioned blacl rather than their new metrosexual zesty nigga style western animators love and actual black dudes hate

Do you think they have boardroom debates about how black a black character needs to be (or more importantly, how zesty and effeminate and unlikely to help revolutionaries overthrow their capitalist masters)?
