I have cleverness fatigue, I have topicality fatigue. Too many films these days would rather be thought of as clever than actually deliver on anything. And they’re hardly even clever. The new movie in theatres, WEAPONS, is a prime example. Anytime something remotely scary happens, it cuts away to another character and gives you a half hour of nothing horror-related, just dry reddit humour, until something scary happens, and then it cuts away again… The director wants normalfags to praise him as a genius, you see, and the average movie fan’s self esteem is so low that if they see a film that is tonal and structural gobbledygook and don’t understand it, they immediately think the movie is too smart for them. Actually, they sell themselves short, and are not too stupid, but are understanding with perfect clarity that the film is an incomprehensible mess.
