Microsoft started gamifying interviews by asking silly questions like, "How many carpenters are there in New York?" They then added more brain teasers and gotchas. They got a lot of attention for it and became a "premier" employer for it.
As with all games, people get good at them and cheat. The next candidate was data structures and algorithms, popularized by Google. By changing the game, they became the new "premier" employer.
As with the previous game, people are becoming good at it and cheating. It's pretty late in the loop, so we'll see a new game to play soon.
As for everyone else, they are just copying the big boys because the copycats think the big boys know what they are doing.

In the USA, it is illegal to use IQ tests for employment. He is correct that these are essentially much worse IQ tests that are in a legal grey zone.
