Microsoft started gamifying interviews by asking silly questions like, "How many carpenters are there in New York?" They then added more brain teasers and gotchas. They got a lot of attention for it and became a "premier" employer for it.
As with all games, people get good at them and cheat. The next candidate was data structures and algorithms, popularized by Google. By changing the game, they became the new "premier" employer.
As with the previous game, people are becoming good at it and cheating. It's pretty late in the loop, so we'll see a new game to play soon.
As for everyone else, they are just copying the big boys because the copycats think the big boys know what they are doing.

By the way, the Sri Lankan in Bezos's story had solved a similar problem years before and so managed to solve it easily, just like OP's father did, because he was used to solving olympiad problems when he was younger. Math problems are like riding a bicycle: you remember them for years after doing it.
Basically, if you want to be good at math, then study math! Very esoteric thing to say, I know. That doesn't mean that some people aren't more talented than others, but if you look at the data, the average IQ for math and physics majors is around 130, which is high but not insanely so, especially when taking into account the fact that studying math and physics is shown to increase IQ score. That is to say, you don't need to be a mega genius to be a mathematician or a physicist; if you work hard and are passionate about it, you can still contribute to the sum of human knowledge, even if you don't become a household name.
Pic very much related, though ignore the x-axis, as it's not really relevant.
