I think so. Depending on how you see it, unfortunately/fortunately websites have begun using it more and more recently. This is going to lead to a cascading effect where 4chan users have to manually convert them back to PNG and JPG. The former is annoying and hogs bandwidth and the latter destroys quality and also hogs bandwidth somewhat.

From a technical point of view the only practical successors to PNG/GIF that currently exist are Webp and Jpeg XL. I especially like the latter but it's fair to point out that the former uses less CPU resources for decoding/encoding.
