yes, it's just technically not possible for a website to serve a webp image to your browser.

Adoption of better things here tends to take a while. For example it took a thorough doxing to encourage 4chan to update ghostscript.

On the technical side of things WebP would be a pretty huge upgrade over PNG and more importantly GIF. It's a hit or miss for JPG since its lossy compression efficiency advantage depends on the image type.

IMHO Jpeg XL + AVIF is the future.

Use a 3rd party client that converts WebPs automatically, like Chance on iOS and Android.

I rather have them support a real image format.

I think so. Depending on how you see it, unfortunately/fortunately websites have begun using it more and more recently. This is going to lead to a cascading effect where 4chan users have to manually convert them back to PNG and JPG. The former is annoying and hogs bandwidth and the latter destroys quality and also hogs bandwidth somewhat.

From a technical point of view the only practical successors to PNG/GIF that currently exist are Webp and Jpeg XL. I especially like the latter but it's fair to point out that the former uses less CPU resources for decoding/encoding.

But on the other hand, look at the video situation!
4chan was "kinda" advanced with use of VP9, and as soon as mp4/h264 was allowed, splooch, a wave of last content flooded this damn website.
Heck, some coomer just discovered yeasterday that "hey! By using VP9, I can cram more porn in mu 4Mb!'

Allowing mainstream file formats also allow mainstream content, and thus, no filtering on quality.
I won't say keeping jpg and png will magically keep quality high (kek) but setting up a (small) barrier of entry for the website contribute to keep normies away.
Imho.

You're expecting too much from a website that runs on 12-year-old software. Remember they took like 8 years to support VP9 and didn't even make any announcement.
