It became way easier once I realized that if you change direction in mid air while poging, you still need to do directional input for the changed direction because holding down will just default you to your initial heading. Thats probably why so many people think its inconsistent.

Then once you get the air dash and floaty cape they become real easy, haven't messed around with reaper to much on them though.
