Many early box artists (particularly in the west) never actually played the games they were making art for. It's funny considering the early black box NES games were very on-the-nose about what you were playing - no funny business. But at the end of the day, it was still approved by the producers. It's what you're supposed to have in mind when you're playing the game, and what makes you buy the game you see on store shelves. Box artstyles don't look like that anymore because if they wanted the game to look a certain way, they can just do that in the game with today's graphics capabilities. That's what I mean when I say I miss the way old Final Fantasy used to look.
