Ergot is a fungus, specifically Claviceps purpurea, that can infect wheat and other grains, including rye. It produces ergot alkaloids, some of which are precursors to LSD, but ergot itself does not contain LSD. The fungus can cause ergotism, or ergot poisoning, when consumed.
