Any ideas why NVIDIA driver update can cause eye strain?

>had GTX 1060
>536.xx drivers
>everything is fine can game and stare at display for 13 hours aday
>PoE2 comes out
>says drivers obsolete
>try upgrading to whatever was latest at the time
>548.xx something
>fucking eyes bleeding out of sockets
>fuck around with dithering, didn't fix anything, revert
>fast forward few years
>buy 4070 Ti Super
>536.xx drivers don't support it
>upgrade to 566.36
>screenshot all settings, everything looks the same

It is not as bad as the last time I tried upgrading drivers, but it still makes me very sleepy after few hours of use. Like, I can tell my vigor returning when I turn away from monitor or go out for snacks.

Now, I don't get migraines or red eyes from those drivers like it was before, but it does tire my eyes and make me sleepy very quickly. I've found this thread so this isn't one off issue, nor does it seem to be limited to NVIDIA https://ledstrain.org/d/1524-eye-strain-with-new-gpu/146

What I tried:
>digital vibrance: 35, reduced brighntess, contrast and gamma for blue channel
>fucking around with Hz of monitors, currently at standard 60
>Color output mode: fucked around with limited & full
>fucked around with sRGB and NVIDIA Profile Inspector & gradient PNG: dithering seems to be completely off on my system, which is common culprit for eye strain
