Found this out with a friendship group that came together to play dnf duel on release
Everyone initially loved it and played it every day for hours, despite the jank, despite the bullshit balancing, even when they improved to the point where matchups were a legit consideration and they werent just mashing it out in neutral
They played tourneys, went to locals, joined discords and learned tech, watched rooflemonger's beginner guides, all that shit
But as soon as influencers started dunking on the game and calling for players to move on, saying dnfd was irredeemable and patches were coming too slow, despite still actively enjoying it and investing more time per day than they did at launch, they immediately stopped playing
Their enthusiasm was legitimate, but the fucking MINUTE public discourse went negative they cut ties and ran to another fotm fg
Which happened to be strive since that was around the time season 2 dropped and the yoyo-spinning faggot of eternal discourse was making headlines
