They tried too hard to incorporate the arcade design into his face and eyes and he looks like he's trying too hard to be friendly or appear friendly. Rare's DK was always smiling and looked friendly, regardless of the monobrow making him look intimidating.

And that was also the point - DK was given a new, hip look, a look that eventually became timeless and classic in its own right.
