There's no way they expected Mario numbers. The budget was clearly very low for a switch 2 game, with the whole game clocking in at like 7gb while the rest of the switch 2's year 1 library is averaging 30gb. They also dumped it out in the summer instead of saving it for the holidays. And the game is substantially more difficult and complex than recent Mario games, which isn't what you do if you're targetting the wide audience.

I wasn't talking about value I was talking about budget, and while file size isn't a perfect correlation to budget, generally a bigger budget will mean higher quality assets that take up more space. Bananza's texture quality is very low for a switch 2 game, just looking at it you can tell most textures are 540-720p, almost nothing even 1080p let alone higher.

Now on the switch 1, this would have been a mid budget title, not on the level of BotW or Animal Crossing but certainly on par with a lot of their games on that console. But on the switch 2, Nintendo is spending about twice as much developing games each year and the games are also taking longer to develop, likely meaning 3-4x the budget on average. Donkey Kong Bananza does not refect this increase in budget. It probably did not take more than 3-4 years to make nor did it take some massive team of artists.

Finally, I'd like to restate BUDGET DOES NOT EQUAL VALUE, I AM NOT CALLING THE GAME BAD. I am saying it probably hit the numbers Nintendo wanted it to do. If they wanted it to sell more they would have spent more money on it.

Bananza isn't the best game of all time but it's certainly in the better end, and it's nice that Nintendo is taking the ip seriously as the flagship title, instead of treating it like a side project that the series was almost heading towards.
The situation is definitely not comparable to the current state of Star Wars at all. The only argument against Bananza being Monkey's design pretty much proves that no matter how much one hates the new installment, there isn't a lot of thing to talk about the flaws of the gameplay.

I don't know why I don't like the Donkey Kong model in Mario Kart World (and I guess Mario Tennis Fever as well?). Maybe it's the flat fur texture, maybe it's the dead-eye stare he gives most of the time, maybe it's how small his eyes are in general with them being much lower than his brow now. It's not the redesign itself because his model in Donkey Kong Bananza looks amazing. It just makes it more obvious the design was made for Bananza first and then later incorporated into other projects like the Movie.

Maybe this is just another product of Mario Kart's terrible track record with DK models, they also ruined the perfectly good Rare model in 8DX. This really is a weird representation of the new Bananza model. Not sure about Tennis Fever since that isn’t out yet.
