I agree. It's just fascinating that the sequels could fuck up so bad, but at the same time each is individually good enough that they all stand on their own merits. That's not to say that going from 1 to 2 and especially 2 to 3 wasn't a very rough process, but the Mass Effect fandom settled down and chilled out in a way that, say Elder Scrolls never did, despite how similar those arcs really are in terms of slopifying the series. Some mix of frontloading your controversy, the difference between sci-fi and fantasy fans, and just plain execution on concept, I guess.
