Historically, in some contexts, the word "nigger" was used to refer to various non-white groups, including Indians.
During the British colonial period in India, a British historian referred to Indians as "a race of men lamentably degenerate and base..." and The New York Times reports that "Indians, too, were called 'niggers'". Richard Francis Burton, a 19th-century British explorer, was called "White Nigger" by his colleagues in the Bombay Army, who ostracized him for immersing himself in Indian culture.
