There are 50-odd spells you can cast whenever appropriate. Most cost health or need spell components to cast.
The quirk of the system is that instead of telling you which spells are available in a given situation you're given a jumble of letters and need to figure out which spell names you can write out using them.
It's alright. It fits the unique, weird setting.
I'd definitely give the games a chance, they are some of my favorites.
