There are 50-odd spells you can cast whenever appropriate. Most cost health or need spell components to cast.
The quirk of the system is that instead of telling you which spells are available in a given situation you're given a jumble of letters and need to figure out which spell names you can write out using them.
It's alright. It fits the unique, weird setting.

I'd definitely give the games a chance, they are some of my favorites.

Recently discovered that Tunnels & Trolls (essentially D&D's first clone) has a whole line of solo gamebooks that use the core mechanics.

They are interesting, and much more... Pulp, in the sense that you can clearly see that the writers were influenced far more by Conan and those horny low-budget S&S movies than by fantasy door-stoppers. Despite being pretty short, some also have a fair amount of variety in the scenarios and don't tend to be as sadistic in regards to difficulty as too many of their contemporaries.

Worth an evening, I would say.

I'm only 5 chapters in so far but that's been the most disappointing thing: Your choice of weapon, specialization, heritage, education, what type of magic you focus on, none of it seems to matter.
All weapons are treated equally. No checks for specific weapons, none that have an advantage over another. Just pick one and raise it.
Every magic check is slightly easier if you've focused on the right school of magic, but the generic magic skill will do just fine too. So as long as you're raising any magic skill, you're good for every type of magic.
Specialization, education and heritage all only change a tiny bit of flavor text.
It's not enough to sour me on the game but definitely disappointing. Not to sound like a shill but I can't help but compare it to something like AC, where what stats you focus on and which style you choose do actually dictate what you can do inside and outside of combat.

Twine isn't brainlet-enabling enough for most CS writers. Setting up 4 radko buttons and a continue buttion in twine requires custom labels, classes, opening and closing tags for every choice, a big continue button with a run.engine call and closing tag, if or case statements attached to the variable set by the choice.
