You're looking at a "Mercator Projection" world map: it's not 1:1 size accurate. Case-in-point = Russia is not the size a Mercator Projection map displays it as, it's exaggeratedly large (increasingly so as you view more Northward) due to its "more pleasing" visuals of placing a surface-sphere's display on a rectangle.

Granted, it IS a very large landmass, though.
