Mostly unrelated, but isn't this such a weird image.
I always figured that the phase in question was a reference to how sometimes chicks are too weak to break out of their eggs while hatching and require external intervention.
But this image - an egg cracked open to expose a rot-hued, entirely undeveloped yolk - conveys a vastly different, far more malicious meaning.
