If things worked out, he'd be the #1 reason the realm was saved. The issue is most likely that Radiance simply could not be contained by any one thing. Only the swirling mass of the Void appears to have been a strong enough force to do the job.
Its a tragedy. Thankfully Vessel can now be spared in one ending.
