The big problem with media literacy is this: the left have argued for years stuff like death of the author when it comes to media analysis. Death of the author is the idea that the author's intent is not the supreme final say because a work is available to the public and can be interepreted how you approach the work. You can look at all media analysis and see people taking things how they want and putting forward their cases.
So when a person says:
>I think Frodo and Sam are gay in Lord of the Rings.
We are supposed to take their interpretation of the text seriously even though Tolkien was quite adamant they are not gay and it is a serious friendship because of death of the author. (See pic related.) The ridiculous thing is these same people will turn around and, without any irony, attack people on media literacy when they enjoy a character like Homelander/Rorschach/Punisher/Judge Dredd or when they interpret a film like 12 Angry Men/Starship Troopers differently.
It is like a bunch of people want to eat their cake and have it too; they believe they can interpret media how they want whilst attacking people for interpreting media how they want.
