People often plays sport games b/c their friends do it as well and thus it becomes becomes their circle's "main game". So they're incentivized to get it year after year, especially that the lack of improvement means they're familiar with each release out-of-box. That's a hard cycle to break even if the product is shit. Probably the best bet would be a promising indie attempt (like Undisputed was for boxing, too bad it turned out to be a great disappointment) as ditching the game doesn't mean you stop liking basketball itself. As things right now even those who's genuinely the fan of the sport and remain strictly solo play it as there's no alternative.
