As much as I love Sakurai, I agree. It's clear he gets too into his own head and a "I did it this way before." At the same time, it's clear that he's added every idea he could and it's just "I want to add X character because I like them." While this may sound weird, I think Smash characters should be brainstormed by a team and not one guy. I don't think he's as bad as some people claim, but it's clear, again, he gets stuck in his own head. I think thats more of the reason he is weird about Kirby since he adds what he knows rather than looking at the series as an outsider. Same too with how characters are portrayed since, while he does a good job, its clear its HIS version of the character and not always how the character actually is. If its done internally, they can also get better feedback by the people who did work on those games. And its not like making characters in a crossover is some special skill. Crossovers like Marvel vs Capcom predate Smash. If the clown over at Multiverses could create something as kino as Tom and Jerry, then I'm sure the talented people at Nintendo can come up with a roster of fun and interesting characters. It will be different, but different isn't bad for a game that hasn't evolved much since the early days.

As for Sakurai, I'd rather see him make Uprising 2 or a brand new series. He's creative enough and is great at game design that he shouldn't have to make Smash over and over. There are 5(technically 6) games to draw off of. A new team can make Smash through osmosis. Let Sakurai take a stab at a new genre or idea.
