It's much more indicitave of the lack of value placed on an individual soldier's life than anything. Sure, the Japanese had Kamikaze and Bonzais... and that came from a place of idealogy and belief.
Russia simply didn't give a damn about their people. The average Russian soldier probably didn't know much about the communist idealogy they fought for, compared to the average Redditor today: they just didnt want shot by their own officers.
And this is just one of many, many examples how WWII epitomized the struggle between modern nihilism and romantic idealism.
