A comic book is presented in a portrait orientation, it's only natural that there is more vertical white space than horizontal.
It's pure good luck that Japanese is written vertically, it's better suited to comics.

The traditional solution is to just dedicate the top half of the panel to text bubbles... but this is clunky compared to the manga approach of having the speech bubbles more integrated into the art.

I'd say making it as it is in your image is the way to go, it's not perfect, but all other solutions are worse. Just avoid breaking up words as much as possible
