Louisiana perpetually has budget problems so it looks really bad when the state university pays a fuck ton of money to undo a hiring mistake. That the money comes from boosters and athletics revenue doesn't change the optics, even if it should. It was just a matter of time before one of these large buyouts caused enough public outrage for the government to get involved.
While I have no idea if there would be any actual legal ground for the state to stand on, I expect someone is going to try to come up with an anti-trust lawsuit against Jimmy Sexton's company. Maybe claim it's an illegal cartel. Even if courts disagree, the public increasingly is getting upset about buyouts, which means the politicians are going to do something, even if not anything productive.
