To add to this, so was the basic gameplay loop which encouraged you to switch characters every round to get buffs, but it still sold itself on being a hero shooter where people like to get attached to the characters and pick mains (although good fucking luck with any of these character designs).
Also promising weekly story cutscenes for a purely PVP FPS where the story doesn't matter is a bold choice.
