Things can go through phases of being trendy fads that people like to collect without going bust afterwards.

What really killed comics was very simply, that just weren't very interesting.
It's very likely that actually they died as a valid industry sometime in the 80's, where movies became such a big thing that comics which up until then had been a main source of that kind of entertainment, would have had their audience swept up from underneath them.
But the speculator bubble kept things going until the 90's, and I'm not convinced they've ever sold a net profitable comic ever since, speaking of Marvel and DC.

Being interesting is the one thing that comics are so polar opposite from. Much of their art is great... but it isn't interesting. The stories may be great, but they're not interesting. The whole thing is just completely boring, and for the most part, even if you've never read a single comic in your life, you likely already know the story, because they've been repeating the same stories and tropes for 80 years.
