I think it can be done but I agree it would look weird. I can see a painterly style working well with the terrain and skyboxes with drwn models for a storybook feeling. Kind of like Valkyria Chronicles but without the anime influence.

The infuriating thing for me was the visual styling for 50 dragons or so was great, but then they cheaped out and used like 4 California voice actors for all of them and it was delivered completely flat. The original compressed audio actually sounds better.
