that's a assumption, those type of assumption kill smart kids because they won't automatically pick one or the other, so instead of working on the original problem they now have to figure out the intention of the author of the problem which the only way to do that is to find the answer to all the possible theoretical problems they could be asking then deduce from the plethora of possible answers which one reflected the intent of the authors question.
