/g/ was right about this IKEA 'table bar' system. 15 quid for a bit of wood, 2.50 for each leg. totally plain, but it's fine for me.

check Freecycle. when places close down, sometimes they just give away good-as-new furniture. a chair in good nick can always be re-arsed x
