>It was not.
Again, it absolutely was. Look at every piece of "karkand fragmovie" or gameplay in general and 99% of people will use medic
>smoke cover
literally NOBODY played assault, and if it was, it wasn't for smoke, it was for the noobtube
> destroy or repair vehicles
Believe it or not, not every one of the 32 players on your team is gonna be needed to run around with a SRAW for the 1-3 enemy vehicles, which are usually dealt with by your team's vehicle and their teams anyway, since the engi weapons were such dogshit vs ARs.
>provide ammo resupplies
Only really relevant in karkand 64 grenade spam noob lobbies, a lot of the playerbase disabled grenades, and support was so bad and the commander supply drops were plenty enough, plus you didnt really run out of ammo for your primary, it wasn't that sort of game.
>neutralize commander assets
Spec ops was so bad that people only used it to destroy the assets then suicide and switch to medic.
>engage in long range
Sniping has never ever been meta in any battlefield game, unless you mean "how to lose the game" meta.

So... No. Medic was always hard meta for infantry only or smaller maps. Unless you were specifically either getting in a land vehicles or wanting to fight vehicles while playing inf, you always played medic. This is just non negotiable, in a game where you couldn't self heal unless you played medic, you picked the class that could.
