It really is that simple, the problem is our historical narratives are tailor made for midwits, and midwits tend to latch on to the first plausible explanation they're offered. So they'll instinctively revert to muh web of alliances, muh Kaiser, muh Czar, muh imperialism, muh nationalism, muh naval arms race and so on, because these 'factual conglomerates' have been offered to them first, and can be believed in different proportions to simulate actual discord and dissent
