In america, people tend to equate "being religious" with just defaulting to christianity, even if it makes no sense and doesn't match. Ben's a perfect case in point. The only parts of the bible that would even imply helping animals are all mythological and predate judaism - they're pagan (no, raising livestock for food is not "helping animals"). Every other explicitly jewish part of the bible is extremely anti-Nature. Violently so.
