"Average" doesn't mean anything. There are some people in America who are extremely rich and that jacks up the "average" because they are an outlier
"Median" is more accurate. Also, many of these statistics often break down incomes by households, not individuals. Households can encompass more than one person, they can include the combined income of couples or roommates living in one place
A better number for the "median" in America, for individuals, is around 60k a year. Keep in mind though that America is also an aging population, and acquiring more wealth and higher incomes is more common when you age, because you gain experience, connections, time to grow assets, etc as you get older. The median age in America is 38, to take this all into account.
So yeah these statistics are dumb.
