The entire era of video games from 1985 to 2007 was basically a single continual golden age where things were constantly improving and there was all kinds of innovation and experimentation. You can point to 1987, 1991, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2004, all as legendary years and hell honestly almost any year in that span and find at least one genre-defining or legendary game. The Global Financial Crisis really, really fucked things over and the industry's never recovered.
