I think some people can't resonate with Adeleine because she's not what they want out of Kirby. Kirby is mostly known for being very high concept and highly expressive with cutest little aliens, and Adeleine is clearly not that. All Kirby is pretty fantastical and cartoony at a DNA level, including Adeleine, but Shimomura (not always but for every character but generally) tended to go with a more laid back, nostalgic, whistful, down-to-Earth style. On the other hand, Sakurai tended to make things more action-themed and bombastic, and the other directors continued to lean in that direction. Adeleine took Shimomura's distinct sensibilities the furthest, and as a result her vibe is very subtle, unassuming, and understated. But also very positive in a distinct way, which is why a lot of other people love her. I like to thing Kirby has as much room for her as it does for the bigger characters. Adeleine at her best is a foil for the rest of the cast anyway, Kirby 64's slots showed she's great as a supporting character.
