There was an featurette back in the day for RotF where Bay used Devastators transformation in the '86 movie as an example of defying his idea of a grounded Transformers universe. Can't remember the exact quote, but I'm sure it was something about the transformation defying gravity or something. Which the man-made TF's in AoE went on to do anyway. He used pic rel, even though you can clearly see Scavenger and Bonecrusher jumping.

Granted this was a while ago and I might be misremembering.
