If you notice, the trend didn't really start until the 2000s, that at least when the big ticket expansion stuff was happening. I don't think it's less expansion overall but that we were just used to the time when it just happened to be everywhere, on top of people being more knowledgeable about fetishes. Like back in 2004 you could write several episodes of Fairly Oddparents where a character grows super muscular and no one bats an eye but nowadays if you suggested that a character should get fat for a small gag, you're gonna get strange glances
