As for the beat combo, you fixate upon a bpm(I played the game long back and I think they did a 120 bpm) so that you can have a beat interval which will be 60.0 / your_bpm_count
Once you have the beat interval, you check how far off the player's input press everytime was by getting the remainder of ellapsed time since the song start and the beat interval calculated above. You decide how to manage combos depending on how far off the input press was and buff the mc accordingly.
