Just finished marathoning the first four Cannibal Corpse albums after having not listened to them since I was a teenager many years ago and here are my thoughts:
Are CC as 'bad' as their reputation in Death Metal circles say they are? No; there's plenty of worse DM bands. BUT... they're not that good either when compared to their peers of similar renown. The biggest thing that struck me listening to these albums again after all these years is how incredibly monotonous they are. All of them, with the exception of The Bleeding, are borderline background noise tier. The drumming is so dumbly simple and never ceasing. The riffs are also fairly simple and haphazardly stitched together in a B-tier Thrash Metal sort of way. I can see how they became so popular though (even before Ace Ventura) because it is very simple music and easy to 'get' as Death Metal.
If I had to rank the albums it would be:
1. The Bleeding (actually varied the music up so of course it's number one)
2. Butchered at Birth (basically a better version of Eaten Back to Life)
3. Eaten Back to Life (there's a charm to its dumb blunt simplicity)
4. Tomb of the Mutilated (ironic many consider this to be the best CC album when it's the worst (best?) example of everything I disliked)
